Binocular City includes the work of two artists exploring architecture and its direct and indirect influence on culture and community.
Karen Brummundʼs large-scale projects transform the surfaces of the environment. Her works include drawings and video works that have documented the large-scale time based drawing installations she has created in numerous cities around the world. These interventions, as Brummund calls them, are time-based drawings of architecture through photocopies, drawings, or videos that actually cover the buildings themselves. In her work the real and the represented intertwine to question our perception of the environment. Her interest is in finding the uncertain spaces between place and time, the paper and building, and the artist and the audience.
Carolyn Swiszcz’s colorful series of works on paper from 2005 and 2006 were made with the loose idea of an unending panorama. Each work was inspired by a real-life sign or commercial enterprise whose actual site may not have been that compelling. Swiszcz explains, “I gave these subjects different neighbors, re-configured their architecture, and added patterns more closely aligned to those in the parking lots of my psyche”.
