POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – In collaboration with Middle Main’s Beautification Day, PAUSE will be presenting the work of artist Karen Brummund, Monday and Tuesday, June 27 and 28 from 8:30pm to 10pm at 535 Main St. in Poughkeepsie, NY.  A collaboration with two 4th grade classes at Governor Clinton Elementary, the work consists of a video projection made from drawings the students created of brick walls around the City of Poughkeepsie.  The event is free and open to the public.

PAUSE (People Art and Urban Space Exchange) is dedicated to using the arts, in partnership with residents and other organizations, as a tool for community development and engagement.  Throughout 2011, PAUSE is bringing a series of artists to Poughkeepsie to work with the community as an instigator for positive change.  These efforts have produced collaborations with the Falkill Watershed Committee, Clearwater, Hudson River Housing, and the City of Poughkeepsie.  A primary focus of this work is a publically owned vacant lot at 535 Main Street in Poughkeepsie, which PAUSE has agreed to develop as a temporary green space and site for cultural activities.

Karen Brummund is a visual artist who works with ideas about drawing, time, and space. Like her work with Pezo von Ellrichsausen Architects in Chile, Brummund creates time-based drawings of architecture.  Photocopies, drawings, or videos of the building cover the building itself.  Each public installation inspires a new dialogue about the place, its history and representation.  For her project in Poughkeepsie, she documented brick walls throughout the city, using them as a point of discussion about history, building and memory.  This information was then translated by local students into colorful drawings that will be projected onto buildings throughout Poughkeepsie during the summer of 2011.
